Meanwhile, the actress and founder of lifestyle platform Goop, Gwyneth Paltrow, designed an entire collection of apparel to complement a Goop x Fromental wallcovering collaboration.
With the blurring of lines between interiors and style, clearly Fromental’s bespoke wallcoverings are more than just backdrops, they are the stars.
Most recently, Fromental partnered Marina Bay Sands to create a series of bespoke wallcoverings for the luxury hotel’s newly created Paiza Royal Collection suites that evoke Singapore’s unique flora and foliage within the hotel.
Founded in 2005 by husband-and-wife team Tim Butcher and Elizabeth Deshayes, Fromental was born from a desire to infuse wallcoverings with couture-level craftsmanship. The duo, who have a background in fashion, had a vision to use intricate artisanal techniques like hand-embroidery, hand-painting and gold gilding on wallcoverings.
“We were the first to incorporate hand embroidery into silk wallpaper,” says Deshayes. She credits this breakthrough to Butcher's background in fashion and weaving, which gave him exposure to embroidered silks from China as well as the artisans who made them.
Today the team comprises artists, craftsmen and designers spanning the globe with workshops in London, Wuxi and Calcutta.
Due to the delicate precision of the wallpaper, each design has an ethereal ability to reflect light, creating an ever-changing landscape within a room from dusk till dawn.
“Beauty is a fundamental need for humans — that has always been at the core of our beliefs,” says Deshayes.
“We want to make something that is beautiful now and forever, just the way nature is. At the same time, we work to create designs that fit the space, either architecturally or to embody the client’s vision and to make it a unique design for that space,” says Deshayes.
This has made Fromental a go-to brand for many of the world’s finest design-focused hotels and private clubs like 67 Pall Mall and The China Club.
“Hotels have the scope to consider exciting designs which may be too bold in a residential home. This gives us that opportunity to really express the best of design and have a lot of fun as well,” says Deshayes.
Marina Bay Sands, with its dedication to creating spaces that captivate the senses, has provided Fromental with the perfect canvas for expression.
“Marina Bay Sands’ goal was to celebrate local flora and fauna and seamlessly merge Singapore’s verdant landscapes with the hotel’s refined architecture," she elaborates.
To achieve this, the Fromental team created three bespoke designs together with the hotel’s interior design team for different rooms in the suites. For instance, the piano room in the Presidential suite features a wallcovering that references Singapore’s tropical environs and distinct architecture.
To enliven the bedhead walls in the master bedrooms, the team referenced the twinkling night lights of high-rise buildings.
Orchids — Singapore’s iconic national flower — feature prominently in the third and final bespoke wallcovering used in living room wall panels where elegant climbing orchids are hand-painted on metallic strata silk.
Ultimately, these designs are meant to elevate a room into a space to be experienced and appreciated, says Deshayes.
“When you walk into a room, you are enveloped by this beautiful design that you notice from afar. Then upon looking closer, you can appreciate every individual brush mark or every individual stitch. That is delightful. It invites you in — there is a dialogue between you and the wall, just like an artwork.”
