WORKSHOP
Basics of Cartooning with Joseph Chiang
In this 2.5-hour masterclass, cartoonist Joseph Chiang will share more about his comic Chronicles of a Circuit Breaker, a collection of comics that recorded life during the circuit breaker in 2020. He will demonstrate ways on basic cartooning such as drawing of characters and the fundamentals of comics. At the end, you will be able to create your comic and put it all together from concept to completion.
Joseph is interested in comics and graphic novels, specifically in the form as a memoir or autobiography. During the circuit breaker in 2020, he started a journal to record the daily happenings to document his life during the semi-lockdown. This became the inspiration for Chronicles of a Circuit Breaker.
This masterclass is offered as part of our education programme for Hope from Chaos: Pandemic Reflections during the mid-year school holidays.
About Chronicles of a Circuit Breaker
Funny and stark, this comic strip memoir relives the surreal days of Singapore’s Circuit Breaker days from April to June 2020. Cartoonist Joseph Chiang records the strangeness and the mundanity of daily life during the Circuit Breaker such as the toilet paper shortage, mask-wearing woes and forced family time. Chiang’s slice-of-life stories provide humour during unprecedented times and document local events and idiosyncrasies that stemmed from this new-normal era.
