Our Commitment to a More Sustainable Future

At ArtScience Museum, we are deeply committed to sustainability and conservation efforts, demonstrating our care for the environment through various exhibitions, programmes and initiatives. As museums worldwide are stepping into a new role of envisioning and shaping sustainable futures, we bridge the gap between imagining and acting, showing that even small steps can contribute to transformative outcomes.

By providing spaces where visitors can engage with speculative futures, and take part in direct action, we equip our community with the tools and inspiration to navigate uncertainty, confront challenges, and create positive change.

Sustainable Architecture

Sustainable Architecture
ArtScience Museum was designed by renowned architect Moshe Safdie, who merged art with sustainability in the building’s overall design. One of the key unique sustainability features that reflects our commitment to environmental stewardship is the seamless integration of a rainwater harvesting system. Rainwater collects on the disc-shaped roof and drains through a rain oculus via a waterfall in the museum’s open-air  atrium. Taking advantage of Singapore's tropical climate and frequent storms, this feature is designed to capture rainwater, recycling nearly 400,000 litres of water each year which is used for landscaping, water feature maintenance and bathrooms within the museum.  The museum also incorporates energy-efficient systems and sustainable materials, including the installation of solar films on lobby windows which save energy from the reduced reliance on air-conditioning by minimising heat gain.

Certified LEED® Platinum
ArtScience Museum achieved the world-leading LEED ® Platinum certification, marking a new milestone in our sustainability journey. Awarded by the U.S. Green Building Council, it underscores our commitment to sustainability and reflects our dedication to creating a greener future. Recognising our outstanding endeavour in sustainable operating practices including water, energy, and waste management, the LEED rating system is a globally renowned symbol of excellence in green buildings. ArtScience Museum is accorded this highest level under the Building Operations and Maintenance: Existing Buildings rating system, setting a new standard for environmental excellence in the region and leading the way in sustainable practices within the arts and culture sector.

ArtScience Museum's programming on environmental issues aims to raise awareness and inspire action through immersive and educational experiences. By collaborating with organisations such as The World Wide Fund for Nature and National Geographic, we aim to showcase the impact of climate change and the importance of biodiversity.

We are also committed to using art and science to engage the public in critical conversations about our planet's future, with our efforts extending beyond education to direct action, which have resulted in real-world environmental change.
