From early creative possibilities in animation to artist moving image, come discover if artificial intelligence is truly all that is promised and more.

This September we take a closer look at short films, artist moving image and documentaries poised at exploring the limits and possibilities of AI-assisted works in film.

In glimpsing the endless possibilities of the future, the programme pays close attention to notable artists exploring the social, the architectural, and the ephemeral in AI through the medium of film. Speculative architect and artist Liam Young takes us through an immersive cinematic journey within the future streets of Seoul - one that is fully and scientifically integrated with machines, while Ian Cheng navigates the complicated nature of human consciousness and agency in his iconic animated film Life After BOB. Rounding off the programme is Terence Broad’s dreamlike experiment with an AI retelling of Blade Runner, yielding giddying results.

Seoul City Machine (2020), Liam Young

Written and narrated by an artificially intelligent chatbot, Seoul City Machine is a short film commissioned by the Seoul Biennale and directed by Liam Young. Screened at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

The film is a portrait of a city where machines and technology are now the dominant inhabitants of space. Our guide to the city is the disembodied voice of its urban operating system software. The script and dialogue have been generated through a conversation with a real artificially intelligent chatbot. We listen as the city machine voices its own creation story and introduces itself to its citizens.

What if AI could do the job of living your life better than you?

Neural engineer Dr. Wong has installed an experimental AI named BOB (“Bag of Beliefs”) into the nervous system of his 10-year-old daughter Chalice. Designed to guide Chalice through the challenges of growing up in a volatile world, BOB confronts more and more of the conflicts in Chalice’s life on her behalf. As Dr. Wong begins to favor the BOB side of his daughter, and as BOB threatens to do the job of living Chalice’s life better than she can, Chalice wonders: what is left for her classic human self to do?

Blade Runner—Autoencoded (2016) is a film produced by training an artificial neural network to ‘watch’ the film Blade Runner numerous times. Afterwards, the film was reconstructed through the memory of the neural network, giving an imperfect reconstruction of the original film.
