ArtScience on Screen: One Year On
This April, we observe one year since the first circuit breaker in Singapore with a series of touching short films on facing crises. From a Wes Anderson-ish quirky animation on mistaken identities to poignant last conversations, these films explore the anxieties and remedies of being stuck in a state of unknowing; charting stories that allow for connection and contemplation in these uncertain times.
This programme is in partnership with Imagine Science Films and Labocine.

Night Garden (2019)
Kyath Battie, Canada, 6 min
This personal short film uses a series of telephone conversations with the filmmaker's mother as she tries to reconcile facing cancer for a fourth time. Low-fi video filmed at night captures her mother’s bond to her home, shaping the tension and isolation of living life with a terminal illness. Nocturnal lush garden imagery also evokes private reflection, and in one final moment, proposes a provocative question about time.

Pripyat Piano (2020)
Eliška Cílková, Czech Republic, 18 min
After the Chernobyl tragedy, fifty thousand people were forced to leave their hometown Pripyat. Thirty years after the disaster, most of the things from Pripyat is stolen or wasted. One of the few things which has left are pianos, as they were too heavy to move away. Who would believe they are still able to play?

Cat Days (2018)
Jon Frickey, Germany, Japan, 11 min
Jiro, a little boy, feels sick. His father takes him to the doctor’s. She diagnoses a harmless case of cat flu. However, according to the doctor, this means that Jiro must be a cat. As father and son try to cope with the boy’s new identity, things go awry. Jon Frickey’s painterly style breathes life to the abstract, dream-like sequences in this sweet and dryly funny animated short about identity crisis.

Murmurations (2020)
Xavi Bou, Spain, 3 min
In winter, starlings join in flocks of thousands of individuals to try to confuse the hawks that attack them, doing a mesmerizing dance. This video is part of the Ornitografias project, a project in which Xavi Bou has been working for years, which consists in visualizing the beauty of bird flight paths.

Helios
Eric Stewart, USA, 5 min
Eric Stewart’s Helios features time-lapses of cacti and succulent over the course of a year, illuminating the growth of plants moving in and out phase with one another. Filmed up-close on 16mm, the intimacy of the medium reveals a tender contemplation on the transitory and cyclical lives around us.
