SPECIAL EVENT
Anicka Yi: The Flavor Genome
Deep within the Amazon rainforest, an elusive mythical flower is said to have miraculous sense-altering properties. Anicka Yi's 22-minute film follows a chemist who attempts to extract the mythical flower’s chemicals with the aim of enabling humans to experience the emotions of different species in nature. The artist suggests that our senses could be changed through biotechnology thus making us more empathetic with the living entities around us.
South Korean artist Anicka Yi combines science, technology and creativity to craft immersive installations that often employ the sense of smell. She draws on biochemistry, anthropology, and philosophy, to explore themes such artificial intelligence, migration, and climate change, often using unorthodox, living materials. Her work has been shown at Tate Modern in London, the Guggenheim Museum in New York, Kunsthalle Basel in Switzerland and numerous other museums, as well as being featured in the Whitney Biennial in 2016 and Venice Biennale in 2019 and many other important exhibitions.
