Peering into Our Future
Peering into Our Future is a project collaboration between Southeast Asian communications agency, Mutant Communications, as well as Singapore-based ocean conservation not-for-profit organisations, Coastal Natives and Our Singapore Reefs. This project aims to create greater public awareness and educate Singaporeans about the plight of our shores. Five award-winning writers - Joshua Ip, Amanda Lee Koe, Pooja Nansi, Xiaoyun Neo and Suffian Hakim - tell haunting and mysterious stories that envision Singapore’s dystopian future if action is not taken to care for our waters. -
0 to 101.8mm
0 to 101.8mm is an artistic representation by Yingyi Feng of how the sea levels have risen insidiously from 1993 to 2022, as recorded by NASA. Using the process of data sonification, the collection of data in sea level rises are presented sonically and aesthetically in moving images and composition. If we are not spurred into action by the onslaught of climate change figures that are presented to us visually in the news, we hope the visceral sonic experience of scientific data will. -
Stingrays. Art Inspired by Science.
Stingrays. Art inspired by Science is an artistic interpretation of scientific findings and conservation of stingrays to spark curiosity, evoke feelings and inspire a journey of learning. These five embroideries, by artist Sofiya Shukhova, are inspired by certain aspects of the past and ongoing conservation work conducted by local marine conservation scientists Naomi Clark-Shen and Kathy Xu.

Singapore is home to a large variety of animal and plant species, which can be found in their natural habitats. Be it dry land, tropical rainforests, mangroves or coral ecosystems, there is a rich biodiversity to be found in our Nature. With this collection, we want to showcase some of the unknown underwater wonders in local waters. Unlike the rest of Southeast Asia, diving conditions in Singapore are challenging. On an average day, we get only a visibility of 2-3 metres, or less, depending on the season and time of day. But these waters are a great place to photograph underwater macro life. Let's show you a different Singapore from below.

Stingrays. Art Inspired by Science.
10am – 7pm
Curiosity Gallery, Level 4
Free Admission
Artworks presented at the exhibition draw inspiration from scientific research. The installation consists of embroidered stingray models. With their slight transparency and lighting, they remind the artist of a 'fever' of stingrays, the phenomenon when a group of stingrays swim together side by side. Slightly different shapes of stingrays in installation refer to various species found in Southeast Asia and imported to Singapore as food.
Through the art installation, Sofiya hopes to inspire further thinking and learning about stingrays.

A third of shark and ray species have been overfished to near extinction in the past 50 years, according to a 2021 study. Yet sharks are also valuable to humans for non-consumptive reasons – like ecotourism, smart design, and the management of the ocean’s carbon cycle. Dive deep into the world of sharks and rays in this panel discussion featuring women in Singapore who work to protect these marine wildlife. We’ll have the chance to hear from practitioners with experience across diverse fields such as the illegal wildlife trade, scientific research, as well as ecotourism.
About the Speakers
Dhanushri Munasinghe is the Senior Project Coordinator for Illegal Wildlife Trade at Conservation International Asia-Pacific, coordinating work relating to illegal wildlife trade in Singapore. She has worked with government, private sector, NGOs, and civil society organisations to support the development of Asia's first Artificial Intelligence-based mobile app, "Fin Finder", which can identify shark and ray fin products to combat the illegal wildlife trade. Her career and research experience include wildlife trade, endangered species recovery, and human-wildlife conflict management.
Kathy Xu is the founder of The Dorsal Effect, an eco-enterprise that provides alternative livelihood through tourism, for shark fishermen in Lombok, Indonesia. She facilitates trips to Lombok for students, to encourage deep thinking and appreciation of the complexity behind shark fishing issues. As an adjunct lecturer in critical thinking at various Institutions of Higher Learning in Singapore and a recent graduate of a Master's in Science Communication, she has broadened her perspectives on various social and environmental justice issues.
Naomi Clark-Shen is doing her PhD at James Cook University Singapore on the lesser-known sharks and stingrays caught by fisheries in Southeast Asia, and is also a shark and ray consultant for WWF-Singapore. Since 2017, she has worked with Kathy Xu of The Dorsal Effect to survey Singapore's fishery ports and collect data on the sharks and rays imported to, and consumed within, Singapore. In addition to shark and ray conservation, Naomi is passionate about fish welfare and compassionate living.

The Queensland and New South Wales Governments are running the longest marine cull in history. Not only is it destroying our marine ecosystem, it’s putting swimmers at risk. Claiming that the current programs are successful is both deceptive and dangerous.
During the shooting of Envoy: Shark Cull the Government implemented a 20-meter exclusion zone around nets and drumlines – in an attempt to stop footage of what’s really going on… they failed.
Envoy: Shark Cull will expose it all.
Get a chance to have a chat with the director and hear his insights after the movie screening in this exclusive Meet the Director dialogue session!
