Ocean City Realised Panel Discussion: Cesar Jung-Harada, Charles Lim, Dr Jani Tanzil

Cesar Jung-Harada, Charles Lim and Dr Jani Tanzil come together in an interdisciplinary discussion addressing the realities of our changing coastal cities.

Life is undoubtedly linked to the ocean. As sea levels rise and cities expand, human life comes ever closer to the ocean. What are some of the different challenges arising from our evolving relationship with the ocean?

This series of presentations and panel discussion featuring artist and designer Cesar Jung-Harada, contemporary artist Charles Lim and marine ecologist Dr Jani Tanzil aims to bring perspectives across diverse industry and creative practice to discuss steps towards a collective future centered around the ocean.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Cesar Jung-Harada is a Singapore-based French-Japanese designer, environmentalist, educator and entrepreneur. With ongoing research and development into renewable energy sources and environmentally sustainable sea transport, he regularly delivers workshops for organisations such as the World Wildlife Fund and National Geographic and has delivered keynotes at international conferences by the United Nations, Harvard University and TED. Cesar is currently Associate Professor of Design at the Singapore Institute of Technology and a candidate Ph.D. in Design and Ocean Innovation at the National Conservatory of Arts and Crafts (Conservatoire national des arts et métiers) (France). He is the ArtScientist-In-Residence from 2023-2024.

Charles Lim is a Singaporean artist whose artistic practice stems from an intimate engagement with both man-made systems and the natural world, mediated and informed by field research, experimentation, drawing, photography and video. His epic SEA STATE project, which began in 2005, examines the political and biophysical contours of the nation state through the visible and invisible lenses of the sea. Charle’s work has been exhibited widely across Europe and Asia-Pacific. In 2015, he represented Singapore at the 56th Venice Biennale with SEA STATE. His short film "All The Lines Flow Out" won a Special Mention and was the first Singapore film to win an award at the Venice Film Festival.

Dr Jani Tanzil is a marine ecologist whose research on marine ecosystem dynamics focuses on better understanding the marine environment and coral resilience to climate and environmental disturbances. She hopes her work can better strategies for environmental assessments, policies for resource management and ecosystem recovery. Jani is the Facility Director at the St. John’s Island National Marine Laboratory and a Senior Research Fellow at the Tropical Marine Science Institute, National University of Singapore. She leads several projects including reef restoration and resilience projects to rejuvenate Singapore’s degraded and light-limited reefs, as well as the Marine Environment Sensing Network project which aims to expand Singapore's marine monitoring network for research, education and to facilitate collaborations for our shared environment.
